The significance of skills acquisition in children cannot be overstated. In many communities across Northern Nigeria, we face daily challenges such as financial instability, high youth unemployment, and limited access to quality formal education, all of which hinder our children’s development.
Skills acquisition is a vital tool that can help children navigate life with confidence and purpose. It keeps their minds engaged and focused on productive pursuits. As the saying goes, “an idle man is the devil’s workshop.” When children are not given the opportunity to learn vocational skills that foster their growth and future prospects, they become vulnerable to negative influences, which can lead them down harmful paths, turning them into problems rather than solutions in their communities.
For vulnerable children who have experienced loss, abuse, conflict, and extreme hardship, we believe every child deserves a second chance—to regain their confidence and rebuild their lives. That is why our efforts go beyond organizing camps; we are intentionally equipping them with essential skills that pave the way for a brighter future. Research shows that children growing up in stressful environments benefit greatly from hands-on skills like, tailoring, drawing, reading, writing, soap making, Vasaline making, bags making, and more. Practicing these skills, guided by caring mentors, helps strengthen their abilities and prepares them for future challenges.
Introducing children to valuable skills early on empowers them to achieve financial independence and support themselves and their families. We are not merely offering them a hobby; we are giving them a gift—hope and a pathway to a better life. We dream of children leaving our camps with the confidence to create beautiful crafts with their own hands. Even if they are not going to be perfect within the short time we have, we believe a spark will be ignited inside them—reminding them that despite their circumstances, their potential is limitless and can be harnessed for good.
At Hasken Rayuwa Foundation, skill acquisition is a deliberate effort to offer these children a step toward independence and hope for the future, and this year we are want to teach more vocational skills.
