I see the struggles faced by young girls and women every day in Northern Nigeria. Many children drop out of school very early, while others are married at a tender age. They face a high rate of poverty and have few ways to earn enough to feed their families. Young girls and women are the ones seen doing most of the work, from domestic chores to hawking on the streets day and night, just to raise money and support their families.
Poverty as a major barrier to the growth and development of our communities in Northern Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. If mothers could not go to school because of poverty, and now their children are also out of school for the same reason and more, then something needs to be done. I have decided to change this story through vocational skills training amongst many others. Skills acquisition is a highly effective strategy to break the cycle of poverty, reduce the risk of gender-based violence, and prevent women and girls from being exploited and abused.
When women are trained directly, we can be confident of a healthy, productive, and growing society. Training a woman today challenges traditional gender restrictions yet our aim is to equip them with everything they need to grow financially, mentally, and spiritually.
By teaching these vulnerable women practical skills like making local soap, tailoring, simple trades ideas and other skills, we also teach them how to read and write so they can manage simple business accounts and communicate well with people. We have supported a number of women with sewing machines and grinding machines as a helping hand to generate income and support their families. With this, families are able to eat well and children can also go to school.
We are not just giving them the training and tools they need to break the cycle of poverty. We are also giving them a voice, hope, and an opportunity for a brighter future.
