Earlier last month, April, our organization, with the consistent support of our partners, donated ten 500-watt solar street lights to different locations within Tungan Magajiya town, in Rijau Local Government, Niger State. These locations include the 1st UMCA Wisdom Nursery and Primary School, the 1st UMCA Hausa Church, and the School of Health Technology.
As someone who has witnessed firsthand, poor electricity supply, especially in Northern Nigeria, we chose solar lighting to support the community amidst the ongoing electricity crisis. Solar power doesn’t require fuel or connection to the grid to provide light; it only needs sunlight to operate, making it reliable and sustainable. These street lights are more than just poles along the roadside; they are safety tools.
We are not only providing light but also enabling children and women to walk freely at night. Students can use the light to read in groups and share ideas, which helps improve academic performance and socialization. Church activities can now extend into the night, with the lights supporting night crusades and other activities within the church premises. Additionally, people can stay active in the community longer, making it more vibrant.
Everyone agrees that Nigeria’s current electricity situation, especially in the North, is very poor. Unstable and unreliable power is a daily reality that has persisted for a long time. Many communities are left in complete darkness after sunset, limiting safe and free movement at night. The situation is dire, with rising fuel costs, collapsing power grids, and increasing poverty, all deeply affecting local residents’ lives.
We believe that light is a basic necessity, and we are dedicated to helping Northern Nigerian communities gain access to it, with God’s guidance. We started with this community, and we are confident we can reach others.
