I am a product of what Christian literature can do. I remember when I got my first kids’ Bible, I was in primary 4. I was so excited that I was always seen with it. The illustrations used were intriguing, and I got to see characters depicted in a way that kept me wondering. At some points, I wished I could find myself inside the story, living it. This is the amazing part: as I continued to engage with my Bible and other Christian literature, I realized that the person I am today was shaped by what I consumed during my formative years. My friends often tease me for referencing God’s word in almost all our conversations, and to me, that is the beauty of life.
Therefore, paying attention to what these young minds consume is crucial, as whatever a child hears or reads, they will want to put into practice. You will agree with me, that in this present age, it is no secret that young ones are vulnerable, because their minds are very receptive and easily manipulated, and with the increasing evil in the world today, if we fail to fill them with the right spiritual food to grow strong and resist, the devil will be glad to feed them with his beautiful lies that can affect their lives.
Though I grew up with a reasonable amount of Christian kids’ literature, other children did not have such opportunities because parents cannot afford it, especially those in rural communities, the children grow up with limited knowledge of their faith and academics because reading and writing are difficult for them, due to limited access to sound education caused by poverty. That is why the Read-to-Me literacy program is important. Through this initiative, children who cannot read and write well, will be taught how to, in the simplest way possible by using literature books like the Children’s Bible, storybooks, Daily devotionals, Biblical fictions for kids, which will serve as guides to help build their spiritual and intellectual lives.
