I remember my first gulp of what I thought was a brewed juice, when I followed my Aunt to visit her local community, here in Northern Nigeria. When I took a sip, I was confused, the taste was plain yet it tasted like water, on looking closely, I realised that it was actually water, served in a dignified manner despite its appearance. I was marveled at how the people were able to cope with such a life. Not to mention the struggle for something so essential every day; the young women and children of the community cover long distances to get water.
In Nigeria, the North West has less access to good water(62.8%)compared to the South West(87.0%). Approximately 26.5 million children lack access to sufficient water to meet their daily needs. (Fit Nigeria) According to WASH, millions of Africans face health challenges as a result of poor water sanitation, and hygiene which has caused health-threatening water diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera. Despite progress made over the years, approximately 319 million people in Africa lack access to reliable safe drinking water.
The children and women who by tradition are responsible for domestic chores suffer the most, as they spend time fetching water, which makes it difficult for them to keep up with their education, and that’s why I see the need for the provision of clean, safe drinking water in such places.
By providing clean and safe drinking water, the children will be able to give themselves fully to their education and their parents will have the chance to better health, and the ability to provide for the family. With good Wells and boreholes, the burden on the children and women covering long distances to collect water will be reduced, making it easy for them to navigate life.
