Growing up in the Northern Nigeria, I see how young promising dreams are wasted on the streets. Most children in this part of Nigeria grow up in poor communities where lack is the order of the day; these children are often compelled into hard labour at an early age to endure the harshness of their reality.
With limited access to education and good livelihoods, young girls either enter into early marriages or spend their days hawking goods from morning till night to support their families, and mostly at the expense of their safety. On the other hand, young boys are left to determine their own survival. Access to education for these children is nearly impossible due to cultural norms, high living costs, or a high rate of poverty.
That is why I believe in the power of skill acquisition, for it is a means through which opportunities and hope can be given to these children and young women living in extreme poverty and deprivation. I’ve seen some who are willing to learn a trade but cannot afford even a pair of needle nor thread. Therefore, equipping them with the appropriate skills and materials, will enable them to navigate life better and create opportunities for themselves.
One of the key areas that Hasken Arewa Foundation Afrika will focus on are ensuring that Skills Acquisition helps reduce poverty by providing the necessary resources for children to undergo and complete skills acquisition training. Children of various ages require all the help they can get, including the provision of essential materials.
