Living in Northern Nigeria, see how the street is filled everyday with children hawking and doing other hard jobs in order to survive their harsh reality. According to UNICEF, Nigeria has over 10 million out-of-school children, one of the highest numbers globally, and the majority are concentrated in the northern region. In Northern Nigeria, the primary school net attendance rate is only about 53%, significantly lower than the national average.
The high rate of poverty cannot be over emphasize, abuse, gender discrimination, conflict, disability, and displacement due to banditry, has greatly contributed to the lack of access to the education and healthcare that they deserve. You see young children from the age of 4 and above on the streets when they are supposed to be in school learning at that age just like every normal child.
Access to education is a fundamental human right, which can equip these children with knowledge, skills, and opportunities for a better future but sadly a lot of them in Northern Nigeria are deprived of this right, as a of the circumstances that surrounds them.
Giving them access to education is giving them hope, it is helping them break the cycle of poverty and grow to be independent, it is helping them grow strong mentally and not to be subjected their circumstances, it is helping them build their future for the best. Investing in their education will help strengthen their ability to develop themselves. With education as a tool, we can help reduce the high rate of crime because most of them are on these streets desperate to make a living and could get involved in anything just to survive but by supporting them, we are ruining the possibility of them growing up to be nuisance to our society, and contributing to the peace and stability of the society and the nation.
