Imagine a bright young girl with dreams of becoming a teacher or doctor, but instead, she’s fetching water, caring for siblings, or taking care of a family of three as a result of early marriage. Sadly, this is the reality for far too many Northern Nigeria girls. In Nigeria, approximately 7.6 million girls are out of school, with nearly 60% of all out-of-school children being female. On a global scale, it is estimated that about 122 to 129 million girls are currently out of school.

Poverty is the top of the list of the major problems faced in Northern Nigeria, situations where families can’t afford school fees, school uniforms, or even books, makes the girls the first target, as they are usually the first to be removed from school to help at home and work. Household chores takes their time a lot, like, cooking, cleaning, and farming, while boys get the best chance to education because they are of the male gender.

On the other hand is child marriage. Once the girls are married off, they are expected to drop out of school if they have started, start their families, and leave everything concerning learning behind. Cultural beliefs that says, educating girls is less important, that schools aren’t safe places for the girl child. Some parents have safety concerns, like long walks to distant schools. These barriers are not just unfair but also hurts the entire communities, because educated girls grow into empowered women who raise healthier children, intelligent children, morally inclined children, break poverty cycles, and help in fostering economic growth in the family and community at large.
But hope exists through successful interventions. Programs providing scholarships, and school stipends have helped in boosting enrolment of some of these children in Northern schools.

Through Hasken Rayuwa Foundation, we were able to e take underprivileged children to schools, create awareness against child marriage, and Trauma healing counselling for the victimized children, with help from other partner organisations.
Work with our organisation today, and together, we will change the stories of so many children out there. Ssupport girls’ education today. Every girl in school is a step toward a brighter future for all.
