The Power of Early Guidance: Helping a child discover his unique career path

I am glad I discovered my potential and passion since I was young. I am even happier because my father played a big role in shaping my career. Growing up, my father provided me with resources to help me grow; he paid attention to my interests and supported me in them.

Today, I am walking this path of my career and ministry with so much joy and satisfaction. When I was growing up, I heard my classmates and other kids say, “I want to become a doctor,” “I want to be a lawyer,” “I want to be a pilot,” and so on. Whenever asked what they wanted to become, I would wonder. All these professions are lucrative and respected, and of course everyone wants to pursue such fields.

The problem is, some children choose certain careers because of pressure from their parents or lack proper career guidance.I’ve seen people who study courses they are not passionate about. Sometimes, it’s to please their parents, whose only idea of a good profession is medicine, law, or other prominent fields, or because of the pressure that if you don’t become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, you are prone to failure. Other careers like teaching, lecturing, writing, editing, and others are often considered less important. However, the narrative is changing now, as more people are excelling in these diverse fields and proving that “no knowledge is lost.”As a mother and someone who works closely with children, I see the need to help them grow with clear direction about the path they want to follow.

We need to understand as parents, teachers, and guardians that school is a place to help children discover their dream careers, and they need guidance. We should not force specific professions on them. Instead, we should ask what activities they naturally enjoy during their free time, which often reflect their innate potential. This can help them discover themselves early. We should also help them find practical ways to earn money from their interests. Discussing the school subjects relevant to their chosen fields can motivate them to put in more effort happily, rather than feeling pressured. This fosters a self-driven passion for their future. There are strategies we can adopt as parents and educators when engaging with children.

We can start by keeping the conversation casual, introducing career topics naturally during daily routines, such as during drives, after morning devotions, or after our usual classes. By broadening their horizons beyond familiar professions, we can introduce modern career fields like digital marketing and content creation, Catering, data analysis and cybersecurity, creative writing and graphic design, among others.

At Hasken Rayuwa Foundation, our aim is to help build children with clear focus and direction in every aspect of their lives especially career wise, and helping these children understand the importance of developing their academic skills, along with other abilities, rather than just aiming for good grades, will enable them to see the real world with clarity.
